New Zealand in trade talks with Australia

New Zealand Minister for Trade Tim Grosner is in Australia today to discuss steps that will lead to the two countries forming a unified market. The meeting of the Australian Ministerial Council of International Trade takes place in Sydney this week.

“The close regulatory cooperation fostered by these forums is an important element in moving our two countries closer to the shared goal of a single economic market,” said Grosner.

“Experience shows that the cooperation and consultation engendered by New Zealand participation is invaluable in improving trans-Tasman co-ordination across many policy areas.”

While New Zealand already has representation in ministerial councils in sectors such as food regulation, consumer affairs and natural resource management, this meeting will address other issues including education and solutions to the Australian wool industry’s controversial use of mulesing.
