More financial assistance for Haiti

by Adeline Teoh   Monday 25 January 2010 11:53 am

Australia has increased its emergency assistance to Haiti by $5 million after the Federal Government found that the situation outside Haiti capital Port-au-Prince was more dire than at first thought.

The funding will be distributed among The World Food Programme ($3 million), Australian non-government organisations ($1 million), and the Office of Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs ($1 million).

According to a statement by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: “Australia’s assistance package, now totalling $15 million, comprises $10 million for immediate humanitarian needs and $5 million for long-term reconstruction assistance following United Nations assessments of the requirements.”
