Mission for Bligh: revive roo exports

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has embarked on a trade mission that will see her spruik education to India, open a trade office in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and convince Russia to lift import bans on kangaroo meat.

Bligh’s first stop is Queensland’s fourth largest trading partner, India, where the Premier will put forward Queensland’s credentials as a place for educating Indian students, as well as advance the Gold Coast’s bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games: “I will be meeting with representatives of the Commonwealth Games Association who are gathered in Delhi this week for their annual general meeting.”

She will then visit Abu Dhabi in the UAE to open a new trade office, which will initially promote Queensland tourism, education and training, construction and infrastructure and food and agribusiness.

The Premier’s Russian leg will also focus on food, where she hopes to convince authorities that “Queensland’s capacity for exporting a reliable supply of safe, high quality meat is second to none,” she said. “This is the message that I’ll be driving home, particularly in relation to Russia’s recent ban on the important of our kangaroo meat.”

Bligh will return from her trade mission on October 19.

Kangaroo meat has bacteria! These animals are “game” and their hygiene and health cannot be assured. It is “eat at your own risk”. Shooters go out at night, in the heat and dust, and kill these animals – presumably getting them “humanely” with a heat shot. But this is not the case, often. Many are shot at and go away to die in agony. The sick ones are more likely to be shot. Our native animals are stress-prone and the terror must be horrific for them. Up to 1 million joeys are just dragged out of their pouches to be bashed or decapitated. It is NOT a humane industry. Processors can carry very little water and the bodies are not checked until much later when they are boned. Why should Russia eat this meat? It is shameful to Australia that we are responsible for the largest terrestrial wildlife massacre in the world, for a few million$$$. Anna Bligh should not undo the volunteer reports of activist who donated their time and efforts to inform Russia of the real status of this industry.
Steve Irwin once said “It’s embarassing that Australian’s eat their own Wildlife.” I couldn’t agree more. It’s pathetic.Kangaroos are the victims of the largest land based slaughter of wildlife in the world.
