Mexico snubs China over swine flu treatment
Mexico has pulled out of a Shanghai trade show on account of China’s “unacceptable” anti-swine flu measures.
China has quarantined Mexican travellers, cancelled flights and banned the import of pork products as well as withdrawn Mexico’s ‘guest of honour’ status at the Shanghai food fair.
Thirty Mexican companies had planned to participate in the May 19-21 trade show.
A statement issued by the Mexican government trade agency ProMexico read: “The recently adopted measures by fair organisers and the Chinese government are unacceptable.”
Mexico has protested that their citizens feel singled out, despite more cases of swine flu now being confirmed in the USA than Mexico. Mexican President Felipe Calderon has already inferred that “some countries and places are taking repressive and discriminatory measures because of ignorance and disinformation”.
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the mainland’s first case of swine flu in a 30-year-old patient.
