Meat exporters to renew Russian roo trade
Agricultural representative body Agforce will aim to rebuild ties with Russia regarding kangaroo meat exports when the the new Russian trade commissioner to Australia Yuri Aleshinon arrives in Australia next week.
The Queensland organisation will take advantage of Russia’s renewed interest in Australia’s kangaroo and red meat markets, and hopes to provide strong bilateral agricultural trade and investment opportunities.
The tour, developed through a partnership with the Australia-Russia Business Council, will cover parts of the agricultural supply chain including saleyards, grain production, biofuels and meat processors.
Last year, Russia’s withdrawal from the roo meat market due to hygiene concerns saw the industry close to collapse.
“AgForce joined the Australia-Russia Business Council to represent our farming members and identify market opportunities as the kangaroo industry develops,” said AgForce Sheep & Wool president Brent Finlay, adding that it is also playing a key role in reinforcing trade opportunities for beef, lamb and goat producers.
“This relationship is more than a road to recovery as we seek to re-establish markets for Australian meat – it also creates the potential for information sharing between the two countries’ agricultural sectors,” said Finlay.
Queensland Minister for Trade Stephen Robertson will host a reception for Aleshin in Brisbane next Wednesday evening.

How can they reassure Russia that it is morally and ethically OK to export kangaroo meat? Apart from the bashing to death joeys in the pouch and at-foot, they are Australian native animals and deserve our respect. Kevin Rudd has already said “Sorry” to our indigenous peoples, so it is time the same was done to these other Australian inhabitants. There is only a little bit of human-quality meat on each kangaroo, and the suffering and costs are not worth while. How can they really guarantee the disease-free status of the meat, and the humane deaths when the “harvesters” shoot in the dark at small head targets? How can refrigerated vessels follow the shooters and keep the meat fresh? The whole industry reeks of exploitation and lies! Activists exposed the atrocities committed by this industry, and let’s hope the Russian’s aren’t so easily fooled!
With our planet in such serious decline a meat based diet is one all people need to be moving away from as this industry is by far the biggest drain on our natural resources and one of the biggest contributers to ozone depletion.I myself chose a meat free diet a long time ago and my reason was and still is Animal Welfare but now people may be forced to change their ways due to the escalating rate of global destruction and the catastrophic future we face if we don’t do something about this man-made problem. So to reopen this trade is not the way to go!
This is disgusting! You may spend all your energy trying to get our kangaroos killed, I will spend all my energy trying to stop you by fair means or foul!
