A Victorian Government report has identified dairy exports to India as a key opportunity for the state after India lifted its six-year ban on dairy imports for Australia. Victoria previously supplied some four-fifths of Australian dairy exports to India before the ban.
The Market Opportunities in Indian Dairy Value Chain report identifies commercial potential for Victorian dairy producers, particularly in India’s burgeoning middle class. While the report identified India as the world’s largest producer of milk, it also saw opportunities in the country’s demand for western style dairy products, mentioning ‘luxury’ products such as ice cream and flavoured yoghurt—which India does not manufacture in large quantities—as areas of huge potential.
Other areas such as processing and breeding technologies, healthcare, feed and herd management were also potential export opportunities.
