G8 addresses trade protectionism and Doha Round
Trade protectionism and Doha Round negotiations were priority topics on the first day of G8 talks, which began in Italy yesterday. G8 leaders rejected protectionism and called for the Doha Round of trade liberalisation to resume.
In a joint statement, the G8 countries and the European Union said: “We reconfirm our commitment to keep markets open and free and to reject protectionism of any kind. In difficult times we must avoid past mistakes of protectionist policies.”
They also called for “rapid, ambitious, balanced and comprehensive conclusion of the Doha Development Agenda” despite expressing caution about the future: “The situation remains uncertain and significant risks remain to economic and financial stability.”
World Trade Organisation head Pascal Lamy said the Doha Round should be concluded in 2010.
