Fewer Australian businesses go global

According to a survey conducted by serviced and virtual office specialists Servcorp, fewer Australian businesses expand globally compared to their international counterparts.

The survey showed that less than 28 percent of Australian business leaders have taken the opportunity to expand abroad, well behind others from China, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK and the USA.

Comparatively, almost two-thirds of business people in Hong Kong, half of the business people in the UK and Qatar, and 40 percent of US business people are more actively seeking opportunities abroad than before the downturn.

Locally, it’s a different picture with almost 25 percent of Australians identifying domestic opportunities compared with nine percent of Hong Kong respondents and just 3.2 percent from Japan.

”More Australian businesses see opportunities in the current economic climate than any other country in the world, however we are lagging behind when it comes to looking for these opportunities abroad,” said Taine Moufarrige, Servcorp’s executive director.

“There appears to be a perception among the Australian businesses that the poor economic climate is the time to cut back and nest in. If this thinking doesn’t change, Australian businesses will continue to miss out on big businesses opportunities abroad.”

Servcorp’s International Business Expansion survey included responses from 7,500 businesspeople across 24 countries.
