Export and trade benefit from Federal Budget funding

The Federal Government has increased its funding to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in the latest Federal Budget, delivered last night by Treasurer Wayne Swan.

The $106.5 million in extra funding will target three key areas: diplomacy and national security; trade; and protection of Australians abroad.

The Government has allocated another $106 million over four years “to enhance national security and commercial interests through further engagement with countries and regions of growing economic, security and strategic importance for Australia including India, Pakistan, Africa and Latin America,” said Minister for Foreign Affairs, Stephen Smith.

Two new Australian Embassies, in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Bangkok, Thailand have secured funding, and the department will look at an Australian Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.
