DFAT suffers $100 million budget slash

The Federal Government’s latest outlook has flagged a $100 million cutback for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), reversing some of the funding increases given to the department in the Federal Budget.

Released last week, the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook revealed cutbacks to the tune of $105.2 million over four years. DFAT itself will experience budgets cuts of more than $88 million, while Austrade have their budget reduced by almost $17 million.

In response, DFAT will withdraw seven positions in its global network and rationalise other diplomatic services, according to a departmental spokesperson, who spoke to the Canberra Times last week: “DFAT’s savings measures have been designed carefully to minimise the impact on the department’s ability to take forward the Government’s priorities.”
