A Tasmanian farmers’ lobby group is seeking emergency federal funding for struggling dairy farmers. The Farmers and Graziers Association says 40 farmers have received State Government grants of $5,000 to purchase fodder and improve their paddocks.
But the association’s Chris Oldfield says it has exhausted the state’s emergency assistance fund and he has had to approach the Federal Agriculture Minister for help.
“The funding has now dried up so unless we get some more federal money this time we won’t be able to provide any more relief should there still be farmers in dire straits,” he said.
“We would like to think that over the last month or two the farmers who’ve needed it the most have contacted us and we have been able to assist, but if there are further issues we simply don’t have any more money.”
