CSIRO beverage wins innovation awards

by Adeline Teoh   Thursday 17 September 2009 3:19 pm

A fruit juice that had its beginnings in the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has won the Best New Concept prize at the Beverage Innovation Awards in Germany.

The Preshafruit juice had earlier won its category in Best New Juice or Juice Drink.

Owned by Preshafood Ltd, which was also a finalist in the Best Newcomer Brand or Business category, the juice uses high pressure processing (HPP) technology in the packing phase, a method developed by Preshafood in conjunction with the CSIRO.

“The unique benefits of HPP are that it kills microbes such as yeasts, moulds and bacteria, and extends the shelf-life of chilled perishable products without adversely affecting the food’s freshness, flavour, colour, texture and nutritional value,” said Lloyd Simons, business development manager at the CSIRO.

The awards attracted more than 300 beverage entries from 40 countries.
