Container trade record for Sydney Ports
Figures released by Sydney Ports Corporation shows that in the first half of the 2009/10 financial year, container trade through Port Botany surpassed 993,000 standard containers, “a new record representing a 0.8 percent increase on the corresponding period last year,” said CEO Grant Gilfillan.
Container trade for December 2009 was the highest for that month in Port Botany’s history, a more than 10 percent increase on the same period a year before.
However, Gilfillan warned the trend may not continue: “While we welcome these positive signs for Port Botany and NSW, we recognise the rest of the world economy has not fully recovered, which may impact on trade results for the second half of the financial year.”
Container exports were up 0.4 percent with volume increases in cereals (up 59.8 percent), non-ferrous metals (up 31.4 percent) and waste paper (up 1.9 percent).
Port Botany is currently undergoing an expansion, which Gilfillan said is “on track”.
