Australians say no to live animal exports
In the largest single petition submitted to the Rudd Government’s Petitions Committee, 34,000 members of the Australian public have signalled their opposition to live animal exports to the Middle East, adding to the 225,208 already presented to the Senate in previous years.
Animals Australia presented the petition to the Senate this week in the wake of the annual Eid Al Adha ‘Festival of Sacrifice’ in the Middle East.
Animals Australia executive director Glenys Oogjes said: “Australian sheep and cattle are currently being yarded in the Middle East to be sold and killed during Eid al Adha. This three-day slaughter represents the peak time for animal suffering in the Middle East.
“Our investigators have documented terrified Australian sheep being dragged by their horns, tied up and shoved into car boots in extreme heat before having their throats cut while fully conscious. Despite this extreme cruelty, the government allows the supply of many hundreds of thousands of sheep specifically for this festival each year.
“That Australia continues to value the profits of a small number of live exporters over our international reputation as a caring society is a national disgrace,” she concluded.

Of course we dont like live export. There is not one animal welfare or rights group that does because it is CRUEL. Australia does it because the animal farmers who send their animals for live export along with the exporters are selfish and greedy and are totally indifferent to animal welfare. NO one with an ounce of DECENTCY or COMPASSION would send their animals to an overseas destination to be treated in such a barbaric and appalling manner as they are treated in the Middle East. Furthermore the Australian Govt supports such barbarity by permitting animals to be sent there, but then the Australian Govt is more focused on votes and keeping ‘in’ with the farming lobby groups to worry about the rest of Australia or with animal welfare. The Australian Govt doesnt give a toss about animal welfare- you only have to take a look at their website to see the PR crap they promote.
SHAME SHAME SHAME on Australia.
There cannot and will not ever be a justification for this atrocity, this blight and shame on the collective Australian conscience. Kevin Ruddm the man who “cannot abide cruelty” has let Australia down, and shamed us in the eyes of the whole civilised world by allowing this cruelty to continue. Shame on him and his government, shame on the farmers and shame on the exporters. May you all be judged one day by the animals you have abused so shockingly.
Australia stands condemned by the civilised world for its treatment of “farmed” animals, and the live export trade is right up there with the most obscene animal abuse known. We sent sheep, cattle, goats and other animals to suffer terrible journeys, only to reach their destinations to be butchered in the streets by savages. Shame, shame, shame.
By continuing this trade in live animals, millions of people in the Middle East think we approve of the way the animals are transported and slaughtered! If something is wrong, it needs to stop. The bottom-line of live exports is $$$. Animal welfare is not being addressed. This treatment of animals is shameful to Australia.
Hi! My name is Ian of I.J.BRIGGA SHIRT ART. I am also an advocate for abolishing the live export trade. And like many of you, I can’t bear to watch or read articles regarding animal cruelty. I urge all business’s to come on board via their web page to stop this apalling practice.
