Aussie business behind Commonwealth Games baton
The Commonwealth Games baton will travel from Harris Park to Parramatta to the Sydney Opera House in New South Wales today as part of the Queen’s Baton Relay for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. It will then travel on to Melbourne and Brisbane.
Scheduled to travel through 71 Commonwealth nations—190,000 kilometres in 340 days—this relay is said to be one of the longest in the history of the Games.
The company behind the event is Australia’s own Maxxam International, which was also behind the relays leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, and the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
“The Baton Relay is an integral and important part of the Commonwealth Games experience and it is a thrill and honour to be involved in such an uplifting community event,” said Maxxam president Di Henry. “Our work covers complete project management from approval, planning, implementation and evaluation to risk management and post-event assessment.”
More business can be leveraged from these Games, adds Peter Linford Austrade’s New-Delhi-based senior trade commissioner, particularly in the sporting sector. “India is also preparing to host major international sporting events like the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and the 2011 Formula One in New Delhi. As the pace of India’s growth increases and more Indian firms look to expand operations globally, there are new opportunities for Australia.”
Austrade will also run their popular Business Club Australia program during the Commonwealth Games.
The 19th Commonwealth Games will begin on October 3, 2010, in New Delhi.
