An export report by the International Legal Services Advisory Council (ILSAC) has outlined a strategy that will see Australian legal firms increase their global competitiveness for legal services and legal education.

The Australian Legal Services – Strategic Global Engagement report identified growth in Australia legal service exports, particularly in Asia.

“While the United States, United Kingdom and Europe remain significant markets, it is Asia that is providing the biggest opportunities for our legal firms and educational institutions to grow their international business,” said Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Trade Anthony Byrne.

Byrne also noted that results from trade agreements such as AANZFTA (ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand Free Trade Agreement), which will come into effect shortly, and the Doha Round of negotiations will also boost access to international markets for legal services exporters.

The report was launched by Attorney General Robert McClelland, ILSAC chairman Sir Laurence Street, and Byrne last week.
