Architects to pitch for redevelopment of Australian Pavilion in Venice

The Australia Council for the Arts has called for expressions of interest from Australian registered architects and architectural practices for the redevelopment of the Australian Pavilion in Venice, Italy. The Australia Council made the announcement of the redevelopment at the opening of the 2011 Australian exhibition at the Venice Biennale in June.

The Chair of the Australia Council said the invitation for expressions of interest signalled the first part of the two-stage process to select an architect for the project.

“The call for EOI marks the start of this exciting project,” James Strong AO said. “There’s a great deal of interest in it and I’ve no doubt that come 2015, we’ll be opening an excellent example of contemporary Australian architecture whilst delivering a first class exhibition space, appropriate to the art of today and tomorrow.”

Those interested are invited to provide a concise demonstration of their credentials to undertake a project of this nature. From the expressions of interest, a shortlist of candidates will be invited to submit a detailed tender proposal to demonstrate how project requirements will be implemented.

Ross Clark, the Australian Institute of Architects chief operating officer, said the Institute endorses the Australia Council’s selection process and is confident of a positive outcome.

“This is a challenging project on many fronts, but we are confident this competitive process will lead to the appointment of an architect who will deliver an inspiring and creative building, of which all Australians can be proud,” Clark said.

The new pavilion is due for completion in time for the opening of the 56th International Art Exhibition in June 2015. The Australia Council will manage the project and capital costs will be raised by the private sector.
