SMBs connecting with the internet receiving orders in the billions

Australian businesses have received online orders reaching the billion dollar mark in only twelve months.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) SMBs received online orders worth $189 billion in the twelve months between 2010 and 2011. This includes orders received from Australian households, businesses and government, and orders received from overseas customers.

This shows a 32 percent increase from $143 billion between the twelve months of 2009 and 2010.

The statistics found over half of Australian businesses reported placing orders through the internet, a nine percent increase from 2009 and 2010.

Half or more of the businesses in the wholesale trade and manufacturing industries reported receiving orders online. The retail industry came in sixth place at 35 percent.

Almost all large businesses had a web presence at 97 percent which is an increase of three percent.

Big businesses were more than twice as likely to undertake innovative activity, involving new or significantly improved goods or services, operational processes, organisational/managerial processes, or marketing methods than businesses that employ four employees or less.

Over half of all businesses in the wholesale trade industry reported being innovation-active, the highest of any industry.

Further information is available with the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
